The People, Culture, History, and More of La Republica Dominicana

Here you will find my ever growing story and photo collection on the Dominican Republic.  Learning about the Dominican people, their culture and history, is a serious hobby of mine.  There are very few telling the story of this beautiful island nation.  I recently saw some "Man on the street" interviews on television where only one in the 6 Americans interviewed was even close to what century Christopher Columbus sailed westward in his three small ships in search of the East Indies Islands and the lucrative spice trade.  Most of those interviewed thought he landed on the North American mainland.  They were unaware that most Europeans did not believe in the possibility that the Americas existed.  Indeed the native populations were named Indians because Columbus did not want to admit to his sponsors that he was no where near the area he set out for.  His brother Bartholomew laid the cornerstone for the oldest cathedral in the Western Hemisphere 100 years before the first Pilgrim stepped ashore at New Plymouth in present day Massachusetts.  When I went to the church in Santo Domingo to take pictures, I had to wait for Mass to finish as the church has remained active the entire 500 years since it's completion.

The photos and information presented here are not to be found in this form anywhere else on the internet.  (Or in fact rarely anywhere period.)  With a father who held a dual major doctorate from the University of California, Berkely in U.S. History and Political Science, it's kinda in the blood.   For those of you who are culture and history buffs, may I offer you my sincere wish that you enjoy the fruit of my labors.  They are born of a sincere caring for this unique people known as Dominicanos.

Over time I will add other subject work to this collection. I hope you enjoy my work.
